Andrea & Susan’s Downtown Providence Micro-Wedding | Providence, Rhode Island
Andrea and Susan tried to get married for two years before this day actually happened.
Covid kept moving the goalposts. Plans changed, then changed again. And eventually they looked at each other and said “you know what, let’s just do it, even if we do it small! Just us and the people who matter most.”
And that’s what happened: eleven guests in backyard in Providence with he whole city as their backdrop.
It was perfect.
Getting ready at Homewood Suites, downtown Providence
They got ready together at Homewood Suites downtown, which honestly I love. There’s something so easy and low-pressure about a morning that doesn’t involve hiding in a separate hotel rooms for four hours. Kayakers were out on the river below. Sun was doing its thing. The whole morning felt calm in a way that big wedding mornings rarely do.
Susan did slip into a separate room to put on her dress, just to save that moment. And when Andrea saw her… the look on her face said everything. She helped Susan button up the back, which is such a small thing but also one of my favorite things I’ve ever photographed.
Portraits at Waterplace Park
Before the ceremony we wandered through Waterplace Park and all over downtown Providence, and can I just say… this city is so good for portraits. The bridges, the river, the cobblestones, the brick. Every block gave us something.
It was still a weird, masked, socially-distanced time in the world, and strangers were still somehow smiling at them as they walked by. You couldn’t help it. These two were radiating.
The ceremony
Susan’s family backyard. Eleven people. That’s it!
No elaborate setup needed. They exchanged vows surrounded by the people who’d been rooting for them through every postponement and pivot, and then they were married! Someone popped champagne, there was cake, great conversations, laughter in a chill environment. It was exactly what a wedding is supposed to feel like.
And right as everything wrapped up, a summer storm rolled in out of nowhere and the sky went dramatic and dark.
Honestly could not have scripted it better.
On micro-weddings in Providence
If you’ve been told a small wedding means a lesser wedding, Andrea and Susan would like a word with you. Eleven guests meant they were present for every single moment. It meant the ceremony felt like a conversation instead of a performance. It meant the whole day fit inside an afternoon and still felt complete.
Providence is such an underrated micro-wedding city. Waterplace Park, the riverwalks, Benefit Street, the architecture downtown… you don’t need a venue with a ballroom. The city is the venue.
