Amanda + Nick | Lincoln Woods Engagement Session | Lincoln, Rhode Island
Some couples make you work for it. Nervous energy, stiff smiles, the whole “what do I do with my hands” thing that every photographer is prepared to tackle head on. And then there are couples like Amanda and Nick, who show up and immediately make you feel like you’re just hanging out with two people who happen to be totally in love with each other.
They met working at GameStop! They truly are two people who found their person in the most unexpectedly perfect place, and have been obsessed with each other ever since.
We spent an October afternoon moving between Lincoln Woods State Park and the Cumberland Library, and it was one of those sessions where I barely had to direct anything. These two just exist together in this really easy, natural way. Always smiling, always close, always making each other laugh. That kind of comfort is something you can’t manufacture, and it makes my job feel less like work and more like I’m just along for the ride.
Oh but then my favorite part….Amanda and her blue hair.
October in Rhode Island means the foliage is doing its absolute most. Deep oranges, burnt reds, that particular shade of gold that only lasts about two weeks before it’s gone. Against all of that, Amanda’s blue hair was genuinely striking. It wasn’t just a fun detail, it was a whole visual story: something unexpected and a little offbeat set against the most classic New England autumn backdrop you can imagine. If there’s a better argument for leaning into what makes you you on your engagement session, I haven’t seen it.
Lincoln Woods State Park sits between routes 146 and 123 in Lincoln, just a short drive from Providence, Pawtucket, and Cumberland which makes it incredibly accessible while still feeling like you’ve stepped away from everything. The park covers 627 acres and is known for its giant glacial boulders and stony, wooded terrain, which gives you this wonderfully textured backdrop that’s completely different from your typical manicured garden session. In the fall especially, it’s one of the most naturally beautiful spots in the state.
The Cumberland Library added a totally different energy. A little quieter, more architectural, great for mixing up the feel of the gallery without going far.
Amanda and Nick, you two were so easy to be around. I can’t wait for your wedding!

Thinking about an engagement session at Lincoln Woods State Park?
Lincoln Woods State Park in Lincoln, Rhode Island is one of the most underrated engagement session locations in the state. The combination of wooded trails, open fields, pond views, and those signature rocky outcroppings gives you a huge variety of backdrops in a single location — which means your gallery doesn’t end up looking like every frame was shot in the same spot. Fall is peak season here for obvious reasons, but honestly it photographs beautifully in every season. Spring brings fresh green growth, summer is lush and golden, and winter has this stripped-back moody quality that works really well for intimate sessions.
If you’re planning an engagement session in Rhode Island and want something that feels natural and a little adventurous rather than posed and predictable, Lincoln Woods should be on your shortlist.

FAQ: Lincoln Woods Engagement Sessions
Is Lincoln Woods State Park a good location for engagement photos? Yes it’s one of the best in Rhode Island! The variety of terrain alone sets it apart: wooded paths, open water, giant boulders, and meadow edges all within the same park. You’re not stuck with one look for your whole gallery.
When is the best time of year for an engagement session at Lincoln Woods? Fall is the obvious answer and for good reason. Peak foliage in October turns the whole park into something out of a movie. But spring and summer are genuinely underrated here, especially for couples who want lush greenery and longer golden hours.
What should we wear for an engagement session at Lincoln Woods? The park has a natural, earthy feel, so colors that complement rather than compete with the surroundings tend to photograph really well. Think warm neutrals, deep jewel tones, rust, olive. That said, if you have blue hair, lean into it. Contrast is your friend.
Can you combine Lincoln Woods with another nearby location? Absolutely. Cumberland Library nearby is a great pairing. It adds an architectural, slightly more intimate feel that balances the open natural energy of the park nicely.
Do I need a permit for an engagement session at Lincoln Woods State Park? For personal photography sessions, typically no permit is required! If you’re planning something more elaborate with props or large groups, it’s worth checking with the park directly.
