Kelsey & Mike’s Avon, Connecticut Micro-Wedding
Kelsey and Mike got married on Halloween.
Which… okay, cute right? But here’s the part that gets me: Halloween is the anniversary of the costume party where they first met. They didn’t pick it because it’s a fun date. They picked it because it’s their date. That’s the whole thing about these two in one detail.
The ceremony: St. Ann’s Church, Avon, CT
Just their parents. That’s it! Four people watching them exchange vows at St. Ann’s Church in Avon, and somehow it was one of the most full rooms I’ve ever been in. Kelsey and Mike looked at each other like they couldn’t quite believe they were actually doing this. There was not a single sense of being performative in this moment.
Stop one: Beach Rock Road Overlook
We headed to the Beach Rock Road Overlook after family photos and the late October light was doing something genuinely incredible to those trees. Though it was technically past peak foliage, the last of the color was this deep dramatic crimson that looked almost too good to be real.
We hiked along the ridge and these two had me absolutely doubled over laughing the entire time. I can’t even fully explain it… they just have a dynamic. The kind where you’re not sure what they’re going to say next but you know it’s going to be good. By the time we got to our next location I felt like I’d known them for years.
Stop two: Saville Dam, Barkhamsted, CT
Okaaaaaaay Saville Dam. If you’ve never been, the bold red doors against the stone architecture against the deep blue reservoir is a combination of colors you hardly ever see in the wild. Add in Kelsey’s blue dress against it and it was genuinely ethereal.
Right there on the dam, they read personal cards to each other. And they could not stop laughing through the whole thing. Sweet, heartfelt, completely them, and also absolutely hilarious, which tracks entirely with everything I know about them.
Then they popped champagne and toasted to their wedding day. Perfect ending. Totally perfect.
On micro-weddings in Connecticut
Kelsey and Mike’s day is a really good argument for keeping it small. When your guest list is that intimate, nothing is performed. Nobody’s watching to see how you react or making you feel self-conscious. You just to be fully immersed in every moment.
Connecticut is such an underrated state for micro-weddings. The overlooks, the reservoirs, and the fall light makes you forget venues with ballrooms even exist. Truly: you need a good location and a free afternoon.
If you’re planning something like this, I’d love to hear about it.
FAQ: Micro-weddings in Avon, Connecticut
What actually is a micro-wedding? Typically under 50 guests, but the number matters less than the intention. Kelsey and Mike had four people at their ceremony and it felt complete. It’s about stripping away anything that isn’t actually you.
Why is Avon, CT a good spot for a micro-wedding? The combination of Beach Rock Road Overlook and Saville Dam alone gives you two completely different vibes within like 20 minutes of each other. Throw in a ceremony at a local church and you have a full wedding day without a single traditional venue. Fall is peak season for a reason, but it’s genuinely gorgeous year-round.
Do I need a venue for a micro-wedding in Connecticut? Nope. Some of my favorite micro-weddings have been entirely outdoors or at spots that mean something specific to the couple. A meaningful location will always photograph better than a generic ballroom.
Can a small wedding still have beautiful photos? Kelsey and Mike’s gallery is testiment to this. Intimacy is actually a photographer’s best friend… everything that happens is genuine because of the lack of performative pageantry and the photos encapsulate that.
