Springtime Wedding at Elizabeth Park, West Hartford, Connecticut

Couple stands in Tulip field on their wedding day at Elizabeth Park in West Hartford, Connecticut

Maddie + John | The Pond House Wedding | Elizabeth Park, West Hartford, CT

There’s a certain kind of couple that makes you remember why you do this job. Not because everything went perfectly, because wedding days love to throw curveballs, but because they met every single moment of the day with this effortless, unshakeable joy that made everything feel intentional, even the rain. Like….especially the rain.

Maddie and John have been together since high school and you can feel it in the way they move around each other. They’re totally in sync, totally at ease, like two people who don’t care about performing for anyone and are just genuinely having the best time. They balance each other out in a way that feels completely effortless.

April 25th in West Hartford started grey and got even greyer. By the time we were wrapping up family portraits inside The Pond House and wedding party photos outside (with clear umbrellas and goosebumps to match), the rain was really picking up. at this point, we had ten minutes before the reception and couples portraits still hadn’t happened. I looked at Maddie and John and said “if you change into your sneakers, do you wanna embrace this?”

Without hesitation, Maddie and John did a shoe outfit change and without even thinking… we all took off running into the rain.

There was not even a question, just full trust being put into eachother (and luckily, to me!) They were not about to miss the April tulips at Elizabeth Park! The park in late April is so unique from the rest of the year. All that color breaking through after a long Connecticut winter feels like another world. And then theres these two, soaked and laughing, completely in their element. This was one of my favorite moments of the day.

But if I’m being totally honest, the moments that hit hardest weren’t the even rain ones. They were the family ones.

The love in that room all day hit me like a freight train. Every couple in attendance was visibly, openly in love and so deeply proud of Maddie and John. Maddie’s little sisters were a constant, warm presence in the getting ready moments, in the ceremony, in the little in-between moments where the love for their sister just glowed. Watching families watch the people they love get married is one of the most powerful things I get to document and this day had so much of it.

Maddie left the kindest words for me after I delivered the gallery:

“I feel like words will not adequately describe how grateful we are that Andrea was our wedding photographer. She was professional, kind, and up for anything. As someone who does not like being in front of the camera, I was so nervous to have my picture taken. Andrea made it feel so easy and natural; we didn’t have to do specific poses or anything because she was able to bring out things that were natural and raw. From running through the rain to dancing the night away, we are enjoying reliving the best night of our lives through her pictures.”

Maddie and John, thank you for running into the rain. Thank you for letting me be in the middle of all that love. It was one of those days I’ll think about for a long time.

Planning a wedding at Elizabeth Park in West Hartford?

Elizabeth Park is one of the most beautiful and most underrated wedding venues in Connecticut. The Pond House Café sits right at the edge of the park’s famous rose and tulip gardens which means your backdrop isn’t a rented arch or a hotel ballroom, it’s one of the oldest and most stunning public gardens in New England. The venue itself is warm and bright with floor-to-ceiling windows that keep the gardens in view throughout the reception, and the outdoor spaces give you real flexibility for ceremonies and portraits depending on the season.

April and late May through June are peak season here. The tulip garden blooms in April and the rose garden peaks in early summer, so timing your wedding around bloom season is worth considering. That said, Elizabeth Park is beautiful year-round, and as this wedding proved, even a rainy April day can turn into something extraordinary if you’re willing to run for it.

I’m Andrea, a documentary-style wedding photographer based in Connecticut, serving couples throughout New England. If you’re planning a wedding at The Pond House or anywhere at Elizabeth Park, let’s talk!
